American Idiot was a worldwide sensation, charting in 27 countries and peaking at number one in 19 of them, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Since its release, American Idiot has sold over 12 million copies worldwide with over 6 million copies of which in the United States alone! Yet, American Idiot was written as a political reaction to the band having their original master tracks stolen while trying to record this album. Titled "Cigarettes and Valentines" the band decided to start recording a new album instead of re-recording the songs that were taken with Billie Joe Armstrong focusing on producing a politicised rock opera to save the band from boredom!
