Born in Alabama, but raised in Fairfax County, VA, in his early receptive years he appreciated the "Folk rennaissance" blossoming during the 60s and promulgated via the radio stations.
At 17 years of age he first began how to play the acoustic guitar as a self taught learner. At high school he was contemporary with Leo Kottke whom he took a great deal of interest in, and heard recordings from such performers as Mississippi John Hurt and John Fahey, who would become his major influences along with Elizabeth Cotton.
