Alan Lomax The Penguin Book Of American Folk Songs PDF. 111 ballads, sea shanties, love songs, lullabies, reels, work songs, cowboy songs, and spirituals from Colonial days to modern times. With piano arrangements by Elizabeth Poston and guitar chord charts.
It's a very complete and representative collection of folks songs, but what makes it even better is the short accompanying description and background on each of the songs. The introduction by Alan Lomax is excellent and gives a great basis to understanding the history and development of American folk music and helps put things into context.
Lomax has included a superbly structured chord chart that, without going in to too much theory (which most folk probably wouldn't want anyway) sets out the entire basis for harmonic accompaniment of songs in a simple and logical manner. Once you learn this chart....you can't go wrong. The book would be worth it just for this section alone!
If you are interested in accompanying American (or any other western) folk music on guitar this book is for you.
