On September 16 and 17, 2006, The Modern Drummer Festival Weekend returned to the incredible New Jersey Performing Arts Center for its most ambitious festival ever. Sixteen drummers and percussionists performed with more than twenty musicians making for one of the most exciting festival weekends in its eighteen-year history. Backstage, while these incredible performances were taking place, each artist was interviewed at a practice kit. Each in-depth interview features playing and demonstration, as well as discussion on technique, warming up, their MD Fest performance and much more.

And for the first time ever on any MD Festival, drummers interviewed drummers: Steve Smith interviewed Thomas Lang, Aaron Spears interviewed Gerald Heyward, Gerald interviewed Marvin McQuitty, etc, making for some truly historic moments. Continue with Modern Drummer Festival 2008
Something for everyone here in the drumming community, Stewart copland lays it down and has fun, Dicenso is awesome and Danny Seraphine is great to see back in action after all these years, Glen Kotche is very creative and the R'n'B Drummers are fun to watch and steal a few ideas from. As with all Modern Drummer Festivals it's inspiring stuff.
I found Stewart Copland's band, Gizmo, to be very interesting. They had a really different sound, although Stewart's drumming sounded like Stewart's drumming. Steve Smith played with his band, Jazz Legacy, and showed once again what an incredibily versatile and talented drummer he is. Mike Mangini, though he played with recorded tracks, also demonstrated that he too is a excellent drummer of many different styles. Thomas Lang and Dave Dicenso both gave blistering drum solos, though demonstrated through very different approaches. Jason McGerr had his drumset assembled on stage as he played through the entire assembly process.
The educational portion of this dvd is found throughout the performances as well as the interviews. First, the performances provide camera angles of the drummers, and their technics, that can be watched over and over again. Since this dvd features drummers, the drummers get tons of camera time. Second, the interviews, followed up by actual drum demonstrations are invaluable.
