Fred Sokolow The Music of the Grateful Dead. There'll never be another band like the Grateful Dead, but the Dead's music lives on. Now you can learn to play and sing nine classic Grateful Dead tunes from start to finish with Fred Sokolow's 90-minute instructional video. For each song Fred show you how to fingerpick backup while singing, how to play instrumental solo, and how to begin and end the tune.
Along the way, you'll learn a lot about finger-picking: backup patterns, soloing ideas and chord positions. Each song is played at regular speed and then slowed down on a split-screen that gives you a close-up look at the picking and chording hands. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD.
The fingerstyle arrangements are relatively easy, but fun to play. Sokolow's instruction on the DVD helps to break down the individual songs quite a bit. These arrangements make these Grateful Dead chestnuts sound "old timey" and bouncy. Overall, an enjoyable and worthwhile fingerstyle guitar lesson.
For someone who is sick of strumming open chords and wants to start journeying up the neck for alternative voicings, Fred does a good get-your-feet-wet job for you in this DVD. Guaranteed free of mixolydian discussions though. Even with all the guys on You Tube sitting in their bedrooms, this one is still worth the money.

Songs include:

  • Friend of the Devil
  • Ripple
  • Sugar Magnolia
  • Touch Of Grey
  • Uncle John's Band
  • Truckin'
  • Alabama Getaway
  • Dire Wolf and Deal

  1. Thank you for this. Also, do you have Sokolow's Irving Berlin Songbook? It was on the web a while back but links are dead, so I'd appreciate it if you had it to post.
